Your real name, address, email and phone number get swapped for privacy-shielded placeholders in the public WHOIS record, at zero extra charge, and that alone cuts down on a lot of the spam and scam calls domain owners tend to get. A small number of country-code extensions block privacy protection for registry reasons — those are the only exceptions.
