The short answer

Goal: move files to your site without any FTP client. Time needed: 10 minutes. Difficulty: beginner.

Below: the exact steps, the classic pitfall, and a pro tip from the support desk. Where our platform automates a step, the guide says so rather than making you do robot work.

Help if you're stuck

This guide assumes no prior expertise — just a hosting account, a browser, and 10 minutes of attention. Every instruction works on our platform exactly as written, and translates to any standard cPanel host.

One promise before starting: nothing in this guide is irreversible. Where a step could bite, we say so and give the undo.

What you'll do, at a glance

Start to finish, you'll open file manager to the right root, upload directly or as zip, mind names and cases, set permissions only if asked and verify in the browser.

Each stage is a few minutes of focused clicking — the elapsed time mostly depends on how familiar the control panel already feels. The detailed steps are listed further down this page; skim the whole route once before starting.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Uploading a zip and linking to it un-extracted — visitors download an archive instead of viewing a page; Extract is a separate, essential click.

It's worth internalising because it's not a rare edge case — it's the single most common way this task generates a support ticket. Knowing it in advance converts the whole job from risky to routine.

The tip we give everyone

For anything beyond occasional uploads, graduate to SFTP or Git — File Manager is the hand tool; repeated bulk work deserves power tools.

It costs a minute now and repays it every time this task comes around again — which, like most hosting tasks, it will.

How HostingAlly makes this easier

Several steps in this guide exist because hosting historically made you do them — on our plans, SSL issues itself, backups run daily without being asked, and one-click installers replace manual setup entirely. What remains is the genuinely-yours part of the task.

And when a step misbehaves anyway, support answers around the clock — with the actual fix, not a knowledge-base link and a shrug. Half our best guides started as patterns in the tickets.

Why this is simpler on HostingAlly

Tutorials age badly when they're written against imaginary hosting. These are written against ours — the same panel, installer and defaults you'll actually see.

Annual plans include your first year of domain registration on us.

  • Step-by-step, tested as written
  • The gotcha flagged before you hit it
  • Automation covers the boring steps
  • 24/7 support if you get stuck

Why HostingAlly

What you get with every plan

SSL, backups and installs run themselves here — the guide covers only what's genuinely yours to do.

No jargon tax

Terms are explained in place or linked to the glossary — nothing assumes you already know.

Help on standby

Stuck at step three at midnight? Support answers around the clock, mid-guide included.

The undo is always named

Where a step could bite, the guide says so and gives the reversal.

Written from real tickets

Our guides come from the support desk — the gotchas are the ones people actually hit.

Works as written

Every step tested on our own platform — no 'your host may vary' hand-waving.

Getting Started

How to get going

  1. 1

Open File Manager to the right root

public_html is the live website — files outside it exist but don't serve; landing uploads in the wrong folder is the classic first mistake.

  2. 2

    Upload directly or as zip

Single files upload straight; folder trees travel better zipped — upload the archive, then Extract in place, which is dramatically faster than many small uploads.

  3. 3

    Mind names and cases

Linux hosting is case-sensitive: Photo.JPG and photo.jpg are different files, and links break on the difference — lowercase-with-hyphens is the safe convention.

  4. 4

    Set permissions only if asked

Defaults (644 files, 755 folders) are correct — change permissions when documentation explicitly requires it, not as a debugging superstition.

  5. 5

    Verify in the browser

Visit the uploaded file's URL — public_html/folder/file maps to yourdomain.com/folder/file; seeing it live confirms the mental model.

FAQ

Your questions, answered

Where exactly do website files go?

public_html for the main domain; addon domains and subdomains each have their own document root (shown in the panel where they were created). The document root is the folder-to-URL mapping's origin point.

Why does my uploaded page show code instead of rendering?

Usually a file extension issue — .html renders, .txt displays as text, and PHP needs the .php extension to execute. Rename to the correct extension and the server treats it properly.

How long does it take to get started?

Minutes — hosting activates on payment, the domain (free for year one on annual plans) connects immediately, and one-click installers put WordPress or 400+ other apps live the same sitting. If you have an existing site, our team migrates it free, usually within 24 hours.

Is SSL really included at no cost?

On every plan, with no exceptions — certificates are issued automatically when your domain points to us and renew themselves before expiry. The encryption is identical to paid DV certificates; paid tiers exist only for wildcard convenience or organisation-level validation.

Do prices go up at renewal?

No — the price you sign up at is the price you renew at. We don't run teaser-rate economics, so there's no year-two ambush to plan around, and your bookkeeping can rely on the number staying put.

What happens if I outgrow my plan?

You upgrade in place — plan changes apply from your client area without migrations or downtime, and our range runs from small shared plans through VPS to dedicated servers, so growth is an account change rather than a new-host project.

Do you include email with hosting?

Yes — mailboxes on your own domain come with every hosting plan, with webmail, IMAP/POP/SMTP access and spam filtering. Standalone email hosting also exists for domains whose websites live elsewhere.

Start with hosting that has your back.

Fast NVMe hosting, free SSL and migration, and real people on support around the clock — at prices that stay put.
